Description

The West pulls on the heartstrings of America, signifying freedom and rugged individualism like no other place on earth. Dedicated to Theodore Roosevelt, The Virginian: A Horseman of the Plains is the story of a foreman on a Wyoming cattle ranch. In this exciting novel, the mysterious cowboy known simply as the ‘Virginian.’ falls in love with an attractive schoolteacher who introduces him to the works of Shakespeare. His honor is at stake when his friend is convicted of cattle rustling, leading to literature’s first showdown.

About the Author

Owen Wister (1860-1938) brushed the dust off James Fenimore Cooper’s western heroes to give rise to the American cowboy. Wister himself was born in Philadelphia and studied at Harvard University, but had spent summers out West. Drawing from his experiences in the West, he wrote his first story, “Hank’s Woman,” for Harper’s. His novel, The Virginian, (1902) was born out of a discussion on American life with Theodore Roosevelt. Despite his success with the westerns genre, the bulk of Wister’s work is novels, histories, and children’s books. His novels The Dragon of Wantley and The Virginian are both available in eBook format.
